Reaching this destination is very simple: starting directly from our house by car, the journey is about 25 km, along the road of the Dolomites. On site you will find a limited number of parking spaces: if it is full, you can leave your car in the parking lots of the neighboring villages, reaching the lake through the paths. Alternatively, we recommend taking the bus, a free service thanks to the Val di Fassa Card that we will give you at the time of booking.
Located at 1,520 meters above sea level in Val d’Ega, Lake Carezza represents one of the most famous and appreciated viewpoints and Dolomite lakes in the whole Dolomite area: all around there are splendid fir woods and its crystalline waters reflect the Latemar group, which gives the environment a touch of magic. Being a lake that feeds itself from underground springs, we advise you to visit it during the months of May, June and July during which, thanks to the melting snow and spring rainfall, it will reach its maximum expansion. In the other months the body of water is considerably reduced, however knowing the reason it will always offer a splendid landscape and an excellent day in the presence of the Dolomite peaks. Furthermore, early in the morning and late in the evening, with the colors of dawn and sunset, the contrast between the grandeur of the Latemar, the green of the trees and the water of the lake creates a unique and exciting panorama. In all seasons, therefore, it will be possible to go around the lake completely (about 40 minutes) admiring it from every angle: the walk is very simple and suitable for everyone.
Lake Carezza reserves many surprises and various ideas that invite you to discover this mountain destination in every corner and aspect: the body of water that enchants with colors ranging from turquoise to emerald green is in fact the protagonist of numerous legends such as della Ninfa del Lago which, from a distance, might seem like a girl bathing in the emerald waters is Ondina, the statue of the nymph that emerges from the waters of the lake. A curious legend tells that the Latemar sorcerer fell in love with her and tried to kidnap her by making a beautiful rainbow appear above the lake to attract her, but when she came out of the water she saw the sorcerer and fled scared. The wizard then, very angry, destroyed the rainbow into a thousand pieces and threw it into the lake, which is why even today the color of its waters is so beautiful and shining.
A simple path allows you to walk around the lake with the particularity that panoramic points have been created in various places where you can stop and enjoy the landscape comfortably seated on wooden benches or, if you are passionate, place yourself with your camera to capture the magnificent surrounding landscape. At the beginning of the path there is a large wooden balcony where you can admire the lake from a splendid position. We remind you that during the Christmas period a suggestive and romantic Christmas market comes to life, and after a heavy snowfall, it will be possible to let the little ones go along the path on a sled: fun will be guaranteed!
The visit to the lake can therefore be in the name of relaxation or in the name of sport and trekking. Numerous hiking trails start from here, all well marked by various signs: a simple path starts from the lake towards another lake called Lago di Mezzo, a stretch of water less than half an hour’s walk away. Another well-known destination is the Malga Stadlalm, easily reachable on foot where you can access a typical mountain pasture where you can rest in the middle of the greenery and savor the specialties of the area. Even the Latemar group, which is reflected in the crystal clear waters, can be reached by the most intrepid walkers for a day of more demanding hiking. There are many paths and the variations available allow you to explore the whole surrounding area: whether it’s a light walk or a demanding trek, it doesn’t matter what your goal is, we will be happy to advise you, together with our partner guides, on the most suitable for you
If you are a two-wheel enthusiast, you can start from here on the numerous dedicated routes that allow you to explore the entire Val d’Ega far and wide, and beyond. In fact, in the summer, the ski lifts are also active, allowing you to climb to higher altitudes and enjoy a landscape that is still different from the one you started from. It is good to bear in mind that it is not possible to go around Lake Carezza by mountain bike, so it is necessary to leave the vehicles parked and pick them up later. The reason is given by the delicacy of this area and the very narrow paths that do not allow you to move around easily. Just above the lake you will find paths also open to mountain bikes to other destinations, especially to reach the slopes of Latemar.
Due to an enormous landslide of the Latemar over two centuries ago, a mysterious labyrinth of rocks was formed at the foot of this mountain range. Young and old can set out on this adventurous excursion that starts right from Lake Carezza (path 11) and leads through the Radura di Mezzo (path 20) to reach the Latemar labyrinth. Furthermore, for the bravest, starting directly from the lake, you can cross a small Tibetan bridge after a hundred meters, a real gem for those who love adventure and adrenaline.
We are sure that the various activities described, available in our weekly outdoor activity programme, or simply a short stop in this little corner of paradise, will make your stay here at Cèsa Planber a truly unique and exciting experience!
