In many parts of Italy and Europe at the beginning of December San Nicolò is celebrated bringing presents to children. In the German-speaking areas, in Trentino Alto Adige, in some parts of the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, San Nicolò is accompanied by the Krampus – devils in disguise.
And then, December 5 and 6, just dark, San Nicolò passes through the streets of the village, accompanied by enchanting angels, enters the houses by children bringing them gifts, praising them or scolding them when necessary. The Saint is also accompanied by some devils, but they can not enter the house and have to wait outside. The devils are always angry, armed with whips and chains. Their faces are covered with diabolical and frightening masks and they love chasing people, painting the face of the unfortunates with coal and grease.
