St. Nicholas and Krampus

In many parts of Italy and Europe at the beginning of December the arrival of San Nicolò is celebrated, who brings gifts to the children, accompanied by the Krampus and some angels. Even in Val di Fassa today the tradition is still very much felt by the community and children and adults alike await the arrival of the Saint with trepidation.

On 5th and 6th December, as soon as it gets dark, San Nicolò crosses the streets of the town, accompanied by enchanting angels, enters the homes of the children bringing them gifts, praising them or reproaching them if necessary, also bringing with him a group of devils, armed with whips and chains and painting the faces of the unfortunate with coal and grease.
