In many parts of Italy and Europe at the beginning of December the arrival of San Nicolò is celebrated who brings gifts to the children, accompanied by the Krampus and some angels. Even today in Val di Fassa the tradition is deeply felt by the community and young and old await the arrival of the Saint with trepidation.
On 5 and 6 December, as soon as it gets dark, San Nicolò crosses the streets of the town, accompanied by enchanting angels, enters the houses of the children bringing them gifts, praising them or scolding them if necessary, also bringing with him a group of devils, armed with whips and chains and painting the faces of the unfortunate with coal and grease.
